Organic Sourdoughs of the World
Organic sourdough is not yet readily available in most food shops and organic, sugar-free sourdough – the traditional type, with only three ingredients (flour, water, salt) – can be extra tricky to find, as it turns out.
Which is silly because we absolutely don’t need sugar in our bread. That’s what jam is for. 😉
So jamie decided to turn his hand to making his own. Which he does with obvious flare and delicious results (after much trial and error).

However, when we are travelling, it is tricky to make bread every other day, so we seek out the organic and ideally sugar-free stuff for all but definitely for our little baby human dollop. Turns out most places that care about such things are also lovely places to visit, whether you’re home or away.
So we thought it’d be nice to collect together and share our findings, as an ongoing resource of conscious food locations:
ORGANIC SOURDOUGHS OF THE WORLD
(List constantly updated).
(Check opening times and if they still exist before heading out).
UK
WALES
Daddy Ocean’s O’yeah Organic Sourdough Yeah – private short supply, soz
Pembrokeshire
Buddy’s Baked – Pembroke, Pembrokeshire
Ceredigion
Crwst – Lush delicious creations served at their Cardigan town cafe, delightful Poppit Sands beach cafe or Newcastle Emlyn HQ. Organic sugar-free sourdough flies off the shelves but luckily can be ordered in advance, phew!
And I thoroughly recommend temporarily retiring your sugar-free ambitions and ALWAYS buying at least one doughnut. They are made with organic flour, which is a wonderful bonus for something so delicious you would need to buy it regardless 😊
Watson & Pratt’s – Organic food shop, Lampeter – see our full post about Watson & Pratt’s
ENGLAND
Bath
Basil’s Bakery – bought a large loaf but maybe slice yourself for slightly thinner slices, as they cut it quite chunky! Order day before, if possible, as it sells out.
You can enjoy a little walk by the canal when you pick it up. We saw a dog riding a bike, just saying.
Cotswolds
Daylesford Farm – A few to choose from and the organic sourdough & organic spelt sourdough are both sugar-free.
We were repeat buyers of the organic seven seed sourdough (not sugar free) and their organic fruit bread (also not sugar free) which we often bulk buy online and freeze in slices for convenient yums.
Daylesford is a wonderful place, where everything is organic. We enjoy to browse around knowing anything can be purchased without checking it’s credentials. Jam doughnut! For example. If you’re lucky enough to have a bit of time, get yourself in the restaurant and pizza it up!
London
Daylesford Organic Farmshops and Cafes – as above. There are delight-filled shops on Pimlico Road, Brompton Cross and Notting Hill where you can stock up on a bunch of Daylesford treats, alongside your organic sourdough.
WHOLE OF UK
Crosta & Mollica Organic Wholeblend Piadina – Found these three ingredient wraps at Sainsbury’s and thought they were worth a mention. Available at supermarkets, where we have struggled to find sugar-free sourdough and organic bread-based products in the past.
Nb. Crosta Mollica is the the first UK-based Italian food brand to achieve the B-Corporation status. So that’s nice.
FRANCE
Bordeaux
Magasin General at Darwin – A cool as ten place to hang out and eat the many and varied delicious organic bready or cakey or pastry or chocolatey treats.
(We discovered this place on our drive to Portugal and made a point of stopping here again on our journey home, to stock up on sourdoughs, obvs. And get some more of them good times, obvs.)

Probs easier to know a little French to make sure you’re getting the three ingredient kind, but everyone we spoke to was kind and patient with our fumbling Francais.
We stopped for lunch with our wee babber and he made so many friends in the bustling joie de vivre of this super place. Not to mention the countless exceptional dogs enjoying life out on organic walkies.
PORTUGAL
AlcofaBio, Santa Cruz – lovely unique organic sourdough. Baby enjoyed it too.
We also tried the sweet potato bread, which we’re pretty sure was sourdough and organic. We enjoyed and went back for more.
Online
Daylesford Organic – as above. Almost everything they sell in the shops is available for delivery online. Except maybe the jam doughnuts. Boooo. But everything you can get is delicious. Yay!
Please tell us about any and all your organic bread and food shop recommendations all around the world. Hopefully we will visit every single one. And if they are bad we will be very angry.
REASONS TO GO ORGANIC:
Bread in The Dirty Dozen!
The Dirty Dozen is a list of the UK fruit and vegetables most likely to be contaminated with multiple pesticides.
When PAN (Pesticide Awareness Network) UK expanded their testing to “all products of ‘non-animal origin”, bread was added to the list at number seven! The seventh product most contaminated with multiple pesticides! And you can’t even wash bread to make yourself to feel better. ☹️
So, organic for me, please. 😬
More info DIRECT FROM PAN UK
“Pesticides used in agriculture can often leave detectable traces of chemicals in, or on, our food known as ‘residues’. The residues detected on a food item will depend on a range of factors including which pesticides have been used, when in the growing season they were applied and how persistent they are, in other words, how long they take to decompose.
The UK Government monitors residue levels in food consumed in the UK. Each year, PAN UK analyses the results of the UK’s residue testing programme and publishes the Dirty Dozen list. This is the fruit and vegetables most likely to be contaminated with multiple pesticides, put into a handy list that you can stick on your fridge or in your back pocket to help you make shopping decisions.”
